Announced his retirement from competitive skating following the 2013-14 season.

Oda is the 2006 Four Continents champion, a two-time Grand Prix Final silver medalist, the 2005 world junior champion and the 2008 Japanese champion.

In the summer of 2007, Oda was suspended from national competition until the end of October and from international competition until the end of December after being arrested in Osaka for driving under the influence of alcohol; after his suspension ended, he decided to skip the 2007-08 season entirely ... Returned to competition for the 2008-09 season, winning his first national title that year ... Coached by his mother, Noriko Odo, when in Japan, but he moved to the U.S. in 2008 to work with Nikoli Morozov ... Switched coaches following the 2010 World Championships and went back to former coach Lee Barkell ... Got married to his girlfriend Mayu in spring 2010, and their son, Shintaro, was born in October 2010 ... Is the 17th descendant of Nobunaga Oda (1534-1582), the famous Japanese warlord during the age of the civil war.
