Has landed triple Axels in competition ... Older sister, Mai (two years older), competed internationally as well ... Mao moved to the United States after the 2006-07 season to train with Rafael Arutunian, but she moved back to Japan after the 2007-08 season ... Won her first world championship in 2008 ... Has trained in Russia with Tatiana Tarasova ... Switched coaches again following the 2009-10 season, when she started taking from Nobuo Sato ... Withdrew from the 2011 Grand Prix Final after learning her mother was gravely ill ... Announced she will sit out the 2014-15 season.
