In 1992, Yamaguchi won her first U.S. title and earned a trip to the Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, France, where she would go on to win the gold medal.

In December 2005, she was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame.

Yamaguchi was also a successful pairs skater, winning two U.S. titles with partner Rudy Galindo.
