Rankings Summary:

A skater or team’s ranking is determined by the total points accumulated since the 2006-07 season. The system is weighted so recent finishes count more than older ones.

Skaters receive 100 percent credit from results from the current (2008-09) season; point totals from 2007-08 are factored by .7 and results from 2006-07 are multiplied by .3.

Because skaters compete at different times of the year, there must be a way to “level the playing field.” This is done thusly: once a skater competes in their first event of the 2008-09 season, that competition is counted in full and their first competition from 2006-07 is dropped. That way, the number of competitions that count toward skaters’ scores remains relatively close.

Once a skater’s score is totaled up, it is then divided by a minimum of 10 (10 being deemed the average number of competitions in which a skater or team should appear in a two-year time period). Even if a skater has not competed in 10 competitions dating back to the 2006-07 season, their total points must be divided by 10. If a skater or team has appeared in more than 10 events, that number will be used as the divisor.

Let’s take the case of U.S. ice dancing team Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates:

2008 Nebelhorn Trophy 125

2008-09 Total 125
2008-09 Factored Total 125

2008 World Junior Championships 475
2008 U.S. Championships 56
2007 JGP Final 180
2007 JGP Austria 200
2007 JGP United States 225

2007-08 Total 1136
2007-08 Factored Total 795.2

2007 U.S. Championships (Jr.) 75
2006 JGP Final 180
2006 JGP Chinese Taipei 215
2006 JGP Mexico 225

2006-07 Total 470
2006-07 Factored Total 141

Total Points 1061.2
Total Score 106.12

Their finish in the Nebelhorn Trophy netted them 125 points, all of which counts toward their point total. They amassed 1136 points from their collective 2007-08 finishes, a total which is factored by .7, giving them 795.2 points for the season. Because they have already competed twice in 2008-09, their first JGP finish from 2006-07 is dropped and just their placements at the JGP Chinese Taipe, the JGP Final and the U.S. Championships are counted, which are then multiplied by .3. Their point total comes out to 1061.2. Though only nine events have been counted, their total is divided by 10, giving them a total score of 106.12.
