(09/12/2012) - As reported by People magazine, U.S. skating legend Michelle Kwan, 32, is now engaged after Clay Pell, 30, proposed to her on Sept. 3. She happily accepted.

"It was a simple decision and it made sense; that's what's so exciting to me," Kwan told People. "We are working together as a team, like in [pairs skating]."

Pell, who serves as director for strategic planning on the National Security staff at the White House, first met Kwan in April 2011, and he proposed on Block Island, off the coast of Rhode Island.

"It was hot, and we were going to go into the water to cool ourselves off a little bit," Kwan said. "I wasn't anticipating going swimming. I said, 'I don't feel comfortable because I don't have my bathing suit on.' He's like, 'No, come on in,' so I said, 'OK.'"

Pell was confident Kwan would accept, but he wanted the proposal to go as planned.

"I was nervous about wanting to do it right, but I wasn't nervous about what the answer would be," Pell told People. "We had been talking for a while about how we would like to have a family and the idea of getting married and what we wanted to do with our lives -- and public service. So I think we both knew where we were relationship-wise and where we were going."

Kwan, who serves on the Council to Empower Women and Girls Through Sports and acts as a U.S. public policy envoy in the State Department, is a nine-time U.S. champion, five-time world champion and two-time Olympic medalist. She was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in January and elected into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in March.
