(07/06/2011) - The International Olympic Committee announced Wednesday, that Pyeongchang, South Korea, has been awarded the 2018 Winter Olympics.

South Korea beat Munich, Germany, and Annecy, France, with a total of 63 of the 95 votes.

This was South Korea's third try at hosting an Olympic Games, they previously bid on the 2010 and 2014 Games. They lost by just three votes to Vancouver, Canada, for the 2010 Winter Games and by four votes to Sochi, Russia, for the 2014 Winter Games.

Pyeongchang will be the first city in Asia outside Japan to host the Winter Games. Japan held the Winter Olympics in Sapporo in 1972 and Nagano in 1998. Seoul hosted the 1988 Summer Games.

The slogan for the 2018 Winter Games is "New Horizons."
