Ninth annual National Skating Month boasts record participation
National Skating Month is an opportunity for rinks, clubs and local programs to celebrate skating, gain media attention and invite members to perform and host activities that will attract new families to ice skating through a series of organized on- and off-ice activities, including free skating lessons, raffles and giveaways, special appearances by past and present luminaries of the sport, games and much more.
In addition to the traditional January celebration, this year's National Skating Month has been extended through the month of February to coincide with U.S. Figure Skating's "Destination Vancouver" initiative, a comprehensive marketing campaign to engage fans, sponsors and supporters of the sport of figure skating leading into the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Clubs across the country are reporting record turnouts at their National Skating Month events, with the Dane County learn-to-skate program in Verona, Wis., and the North Olmstead Skating Academy in North Olmstead, Ohio, counting 366 and 450 attendees, respectively.
