Final role for ice star

Skating star Olga Pershankova's final lead role may be upon her, but it doesn't mean that her 30-year love affair with the ice has come to an end.

The 36-year-old returns to the Spa Centre in Leamington on April 30 in Beauty and Beast on ice, but she is undecided whether to hang up her skates for good.

Olga said, "I tried to make this decision last year, but it's tough. I know for my daughter Sofia I have to. This will be my last leading role but when it comes to the question will I stop performing - I can't say now." More >

Swan Lake on ice

Swan Lake on ice is described as a two-act, ice-dance version of the classical ballet. It's a little bit Russian, a little bit Las Vegas and a big bit Walt Disney.

The production is filled with difficult ice-dance maneuvers on a surface a fraction of the size of a standard ice rink.

The show stars, Olga Boguslavska as Odette and Olena Pyatash as Odile. More >

Plushenko: Buttle looked good, but....

Evgeni Plushenko thinked Canadian Jeffrey Buttle looked good at worlds -- but he thinks he's better.

"I was watching the worlds recently and saw that there were some good skaters," said Plushenko. "I was rooting for the guy from Japan, but he ended up in fourth place. Our skater, Voronov, was not bad. I was surprised by how badly Lambiel was skating. Buttle looked good, but I think I can beat them." More >

Kwan travels to Argentina

From press release: American Public Diplomacy Envoy Michelle Kwan will travel to Argentina March 15, 2008 to begin her third tour as a State Department Public Diplomacy Envoy. While in Argentina the figure skating champion will visit Buenos Aires, Santa Fe and Parana. The Public Diplomacy Envoy program is carried out under the auspices of the Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The program in Argentina follows Kwan's previous, highly successful envoy visits to China and Russia in 2007.

As an American Public Diplomacy Envoy, Ms. Kwan promotes cross-cultural dialogue with international youth to increase understanding of America by sharing her story and life experiences. Kwan's activities in Argentina will include holding skating clinics for Argentine youth, meeting Special Olympic and Paralympic athletes, meeting and speaking with students, teachers, coaches and aspiring youth entrepreneurs working on Junior Achievement projects. Kwan will also share her experiences with women leaders as well as have an open dialogue with Argentine athletes. More >

Showtime on ice

All three U.S. nationals pairs champions (novice, junior and senior level) will be performing in this exciting ice revue. This is the first time in U.S. figure skating history, one coach, Dalilah Sappenfield, has swept the national pairs division, and all of these skating pairs will entertain Showtime on Ice attendees.

South Suburban Parks and Recreation's South Suburban Ice Arena, 6580 S. Vine St., hosts its annual figure skating show, Showtime on Ice, with both matinée and evening performances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 25 - 27. More >

Mabee helps out

Christopher Mabee will help open the new HomeSense store in London, Ont., on Tuesday, April 22, at the London North Centre, 1865 Hyde Park Road North. STARSkaters from the London Skating Club will be present at the grand opening ceremonies when the store manager will present them with a donation to their club. More >
