Novice ladies in tight battle on Day 1 of Midwesterns
Rest of day filled with pairs and ice dancing

A mere 2.05 points separate the top four competitors in the competition at the Onyx Skating Rink in Rochester, Mich.
Marissa Secundy holds a slight edge over Sophia Lamay, 42.17-41.87. Christina Gao is third at 41.72, while Sydney Kolodziej is fourth with 40.52.
Secundy, from the Broadmoor Skating Club, gained the first-day advantage with her showing in technical elements, scoring 25.87 to Lamay's 23.22. Lamay closed the gap by earning 2.35 more points in the program component score.
The free skate begins Friday, starting at 1:35 p.m. Secundy skates ninth and Lamay 11th out of 12 skaters.
The other competitors were Agnes Zawadzki (37.84), Dana Sivak (33.13), Jennifer Wong (31.87), Lee Keller (31.34), Caydee Denney (29.84), Lauren Ko (29.72), Lauren Nieman (29.33) and Alicia Hsu (28.26).
It's also a close race in the novice pairs division after the short program.
Brynn Carman and Christopher Knierim earned 42.12 points from the judges. Brittany Chase and Andrew Speroff are a fraction behind at 42.01.
Cassie Andrews and Nicholas Anderson (38.85) and Ashley Cain and Sergey Sidorov (38.10) hold third and fourth place, respectively.
Carman and Knierim gained their advantage in technical elements with a 30.31 score. Chase and Speroff had 29.90.
In other novice competitions, Megan Evans and Nathan Truesdell lead the ice dancing event, scoring a 43.32 after the compulsory dance. Anastasia Olson and Jordan Cowan are second (42.55), and Kate McDermott and Colin McManus third (41.97).
Daniel O'Shea holds a four-point lead after the short program in the novice men's competition. He scored a 48.07 and leads Victor Travis, who scored a 44.78. Ryan Hartley is third (42.79), Steven Evans fourth (42.77), Juran Yang fifth (41.76), Timothy LeDuc sixth (40.83) and Jason Thomas seventh (40.23).
Junior Ice Dancing
Madison Hubbell and Keiffer Hubbell took the lead after the compulsory dance with a 30.91 score. They lead Piper Gilles and Timothy McKernan, who are second with a 29.65. Shannon Wingle and Ryan Devereaux are third (25.14), Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani fourth (23.13), Rachel Dickinson and Kurt Lingenfelter fifth (20.20), and Kaitlin Miller and Jason Deveikis sixth (20.08).
Claire Davis and Nathan Miller hold the lead after the short program, scoring a 44.67. Jaylyn Kelly and Gabe Woodruff are second (42.75), Janyce Okamoto and Ryan Berning third (42.47), and Andrea Best and Trevor Young fourth (28.38).
Juvenile Ice Dancing
Sage Kelner and Malcolm Kelner took first in the compulsory dance with a 32.62 score. Mallory Detota and Thomas Ontko were second at 27.01. Olivia Oltmanns and Tyler Broderick were third (23.11), Piercyn Hont and Davis Nixton fourth (22.37) and Jessica Manahan and Alex Schachtel fifth (20.57).
Intermediate Ice Dancing
Laura Perry and Joshua Leggett were first after the compulsory dance (39.25). Elizabeth Ritenour and Derek Ontko were second (36.70), and Allison Boike and Adam Boike third (21.59).
