Matthew Blackmer and Carol Cooper (Detroit SC) used strong lifts to win the Championship Masters Pairs title Saturday at the 2018 U.S. Adult Figure Skating Championships, ending the competition with 56.46 points.

"It is so much fun being on the ice with Matt," said Cooper, a retired mental health professional. "I can see him out of the corner of my eye being a skater and then it makes me want to match him."

Blackmer, a former member of Team USA, enjoyed his inaugural U.S. Adult Championships. A coach and choreographer, he trains Cooper as well as partners with her. Practice time depends on his schedule.

"Any time I can be in the air I'm happy," Cooper said.

Kimberly Sailer and David Garber (Pittsburgh FSC) performed an upbeat program to Xanadu. Decked out in silver lame and cobalt blue, Garber's silver pants set the tone.

"Our choreographer, Doug Mattis, presented us with two options and we chose Xanadu," Sailer said.

Their energetic and fun program earned them 50.49 points and the silver medal.

The bronze medal went to Judy Mata and Vladimir Levchenkov (Detroit SC). They posted 48.82 points, skating to an instrumental version of Frank Sintatra's "My Way."

Having overcome a pelvic fracture two years ago, Mata was thrilled to be on the ice.

"It wasn't necessarily our best, but we are happy," Mata said.

Tara Cioppa (North Jersey FSC) and Stephen Trzaska (Washington FSC) earned the pewter with a score of 32.00.
