2015 U.S. pairs champions Alexa Scimeca Knierim and Chris Knierim announced Wednesday that they have withdrawn from the 2017 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Scimeca Knierim underwent stomach surgery in September, and while the team has resumed full training, they do not feel they have had enough time to prepare for next week's U.S. championships in Kansas City, Missouri.

"From both the medical and skating standpoints, things are going great for Chris and me," Scimeca Knierim said. "We are training and working hard, and continue to improve as a team.

"I'm happy to have my health back. We are disappointed to miss the U.S. championships but will continue to work hard."

The skaters, who got married last summer, withdrew from their Grand Prix assignments in September. Scimeca Knierim said at the time that in the days leading up to their wedding, she was "battling a series of internal ailments that left doctors baffled and my body in overwhelming pain." Her symptoms persisted throughout the summer, thus limiting the team's training time, and she eventually underwent surgery to alleviate the problem.
