The marriage of three-time U.S. champion Johnny Weir to Victor Voronov appears to be over as the skater announced Monday via Twitter that the couple had broken up.

"It is with great sadness that I announce that my husband and I are no longer together. My heart hurts, and I wish him well."

Voronov later took to Twitter to express his emotions.

"Shocked by the abrupt ending of my marriage and am dealing with the trauma including multiple things I am just now becoming aware of..."

Weir and Voronov got married on New Year's Eve in 2011. The union appeared to hit a rough patch earlier this month, when the couple showed up in court after Voronov alleged that Weir had bitten him in an incident in January. The judge dismissed the charges.

In an interview with Access Hollywood in February, Weir said, "A marriage between two guys is different than what I imagine a marriage between a man and a woman [to be]," he noted. "I mean, we're both constantly trying to fight to wear the pants in the relationship."

It has been an eventful last few months for Weir, who announced in December he was leaving longtime agent Tara Modlin to be represented by Global Artists Agency. Then, earlier this month, after Weir made a name for himself as a commentator for NBC at the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, it came to light he had again switched representation, signing a deal with Creative Artists Agency.

Early Tuesday morning, Weir tweeted, "No matter what, I am a cheerleader of love and partnership and creation. I am sad yet I am thankful that I was loved and that I could love."

UPDATE: Voronov tweeted Tuesday that Weir had taken legal action well before the news became public Monday.

"Yes. I'd like to confirm, It's true: I am only now finding out that my husband @johnnygweir filed for divorce from me months ago."
